Long Gong is a 300-yard precision rimfire shooting challenge using .22LR rifles. The Goal is to accumulate points by hitting steel gongs located at 300 yards an is a hit-to-move format.
Equipment & Setup
- Rifle: .22LR only.
- Position: Shot from a bench rest.
- Supports: Allowed a basic bipod (two legs in the front) and a rear bag. No mechanical rests, sleds, or one-piece rests are permitted.
- Targets: Three steel gongs placed at 300 yards: 8-inch (1 point), 6-inch (2 points), and 4-inch (3 points).
Match Format & Order of Fire
- Strings: Each match consists of 5 rounds (or strings).
- Shots & Time: Shooters get 10 rounds per string with a 3-minute time limit per string. The clock starts with your first shot.
- Starting the String: You must start each string by aiming at the 8-inch gong.
The Scoring & Progression Rules
- Advancing: Upon a hit, you score points and may shoot the same target again or progress to a smaller one.
- The Miss Rule: Missing a target requires reverting to the next larger target size.
- Switching Targets: You must inform the scorekeeper when changing target sizes.
- Wrong Gong Rule: Shooting an incorrect gong results in a score of zero for that shot.
- Valid Hits: Only direct, solid steel hits count; chain or frame strikes are invalid.
Scoring, Winning & Tie-Breakers
- Max Round Score: A perfect round is 27 points (hitting the 8" and 6" targets once, plus 8 hits on the 4" target).
- Max Match Score: 5 rounds x 27 points = 135 points maximum.
- Tie-Breaker: The highest single-round score determines the winner in a tie.
- Shooter Order: Initial string order is drawn, with subsequent strings ordered by lowest score first.
